Amara sobbed, her body shaking as she struggled against his grip, her arms reaching for him.
“I’ve always loved you! If you hadn’t hurt your arm and I hadn’t ended up with Ronald by mistake, I never would have married him!”
Hudson’s jaw tightened as he held her back. Amara seized his arm, her voice rising into a wail.
“Ronald is gone! Your arm is healed! There’s nothing standing in our way anymore. Why can’t we just be together?”
Hudson’s face was like stone. He pried her hands off his arm and stepped out of the car.
“Amara, I am a married man. Don’t ever do that again.”
Amara slumped against the seat, her crying turning into a jagged, accusatory howl.
“Are you in love with Jade now?
“You told me you only married her because she was ‘obedient’!
“I can be more obedient than she ever was! You loved me first! There’s no reason to choose
her!”
Hudson watched her scream and cry for a long, silent minute.
Finally, he spoke.
“Amara, I pity you and Cortney. I help you because I choose to. But do not make me regret helping you.”
Amara’s breath hitched. She bit her lip, a swirl of complex, dark emotions flashing through her
eyes.
She’d tried to force his hand, to make him choose between her and Jade.
But she’d pushed too hard.
As they stared each other down, a bright, childish voice broke the tension.
“Daddy Hudson!”

Hudson looked down to see small arms wrapping around his leg. It was Cortney.
“I missed you! Why haven’t you come to see me?”
Hudson leaned down and picked her up.

“I’ve been busy, honey. And Cortney… don’t call me ‘Daddy’ anymore. Call me ‘Uncle Hudson.”
Cortney didn’t answer. She looked instinctively at her mother.
Amara gave a small, defeated nod. Hudson was clearly on edge; she didn’t dare cross him again today.
Cortney wrapped her arms around Hudson’s neck and whispered obediently.
“Uncle Hudson.”
Hudson’s expression softened, and a ghost of a smile touched his lips.
“Good girl.”
Cortney blinked her large, innocent eyes.
“Uncle Hudson, I haven’t been to the theme park in forever. Can you take me? Mommy’s working so hard, I don’t want her to be too tired.”
The shield around Hudson’s heart cracked at the little girl’s words.
The tension in his shoulders vanished, and he reached out to tweak her nose.
“Fine. I’ll take you.”
He carried Cortney into the car. Amara was still wiping her eyes, forcing a pained smile as she looked at him.
“You two go. I’ll just-”
“Come with us,” Hudson interrupted.
“And take the money. Find a safe place. Cortney is too young to be living like this.”
Amara sniffed and nodded, her eyes rimmed with red.
“Thank you for thinking of her.”

Hudson didn’t answer, turning his focus to playing with Cortney. Amara watched them, her mind spinning with a new plan.
She knew Hudson couldn’t truly walk away from them, or he wouldn’t have come the second he saw those photos.
He always melted for Cortney.
If she couldn’t win his heart directly, she’d use the girl as a tether. She’d weave herself into his life until he couldn’t breathe without her.
As for Jade… Lyndon would handle her in two weeks. She wasn’t even a factor anymore.
Maple Garden.
This was a boutique private restaurant, known for its elegant wood-paneling and serene atmosphere.
Jade stepped out of her car and walked toward the entrance.
Jewell Ford had called her earlier.
She’d just returned from a trip and wanted a catch-up dinner-and she’d mentioned she had someone important for Jade to meet.
“Jade!”
A voice called out. Jade looked over to see Jewell waving from a few yards away.
“Over here!”
Jade hurried over, and Jewell practically tackled her with a massive hug.
