But the words still stung, leaving a bitter, aching pain in his chest.

His knuckles were white as he ground out a few words through his teeth.

“We aren’t divorced!”

The nurses exchanged a look that said ‘That’s even worse.’

But seeing the terrifying look on his face, they didn’t dare say more. They scurried away, though they kept throwing judging looks over their shoulders.

Hudson took a deep breath, a burning pain flaring in his heart.

Was this how she talked about him?

Did she really think so little of him that she wouldn’t even give him a single good word?

In truth, Hudson was wrong. Jade was so sick of his name she never mentioned him at all.

The person who had spread the story was Jewell Ford.

In the thirty minutes Jade was in surgery, Jewell had made sure every member of the staff knew exactly what kind of ‘hero’ Hudson Walter was. She was determined to make him pay in the only way she could-by making him a pariah in the eyes of everyone in that hospital.

A moment later, Kevin rushed over.

“Sir, we have word. Ma’am took Foster’s jet back to the city.”

Hudson didn’t move. He suddenly asked a question that caught Kevin off guard.

“Am I really that bad to her?”

“Uh…”

Kevin froze. It was a loaded question if he’d ever heard one.

He coughed nervously, looking at his shoes.

“I… I wouldn’t say that, sir.”

Hudson seemed to be talking to himself more than anything. He didn’t wait for a real answer before walking toward the exit.

“Back to Kingston.”

Kevin nodded and followed.

“Yes, sir.”

Chapter 190 The Shadow of the Past

Jade’s amber eyes softened, and for a moment, the old light returned to them.

“Thank you. I’m okay now.”

in that moment, Julian felt a sudden, powerful urge to reach out and kiss her eyes.

But he restrained himself, looking away as he stepped toward the car.

“It’s getting late. We should head back.”

Jade didn’t know what was going through his head. She bowed deeply toward the headstone.

She stayed like that for a long time before straightening up and looking at Julian.

“Let’s go.”

Oakwood Estate was closer to the cemetery than the central city.

At Julian’s insistence, Jade stayed there for one more night.

The next day, as she entered the city limits, her car was suddenly surrounded by several black SUVS.

A lead bodyguard stepped out and made a polite, yet firm, gesture.

“Ma’am, the Chairman wants to see you.”

Jade wasn’t surprised the Walters had found her.

During her stay at Grandview, Emily and Bert had never visited, but they had sent a constant stream of expensive supplements and medicine. They valued this grandchild above all else.

The fact that she’d terminated the pregnancy without a word meant a storm was coming.

But this worked in her favor.

Since she’d agreed to work with Silas, this was the perfect place to start.

Jade composed herself and stepped into the car.

The Walter Mansion.

The second Jade stepped through the door, Bert’s furious roar shook the walls.
