"But Mommy, Daddy Hudson hasn't played with me yet."
Amara stroked Cortney's hair with a gentle smile.
"Daddy Hudson is very busy. He has to work. Be a good girl and don't bother him. He'll come play as soon as he's free, okay?"
As she spoke, she watched Rosa out of the corner of her eye.
Rosa looked as kind as ever, her gaze filled with warmth for Cortney.
It was a far cry from when she first arrived, when Rosa had been wary of her.
It seemed her act in the garden had worked.
To become the next Mrs. Walter, she didn't just need Hudson's heart—she needed everyone around him to be on her side.
She would win them all over.
And then, any chance of Jade and Hudson reconciling would be gone forever.
Cortney, always a good listener, nodded obediently.
"Okay."
"Good girl." Amara smiled and pinched her daughter's cheek, then gestured toward Rosa.
"Say goodbye to Grandma Rosa."
Cortney waved a small hand.
"Goodbye, Grandma Rosa!"
Rosa smiled warmly. "Be safe on your way home. Come back and play soon."
Amara and Cortney had barely left when Hudson came downstairs.
He scanned the room. Finding them gone, he called for Rosa.
"Rosa, where are Amara and Cortney?"
Rosa replied, "Ms. Hoyt and Cortney headed back. They didn't want to disturb your work, so they didn't go up to say goodbye."
"I'll walk them out."
Hudson headed for the door, then stopped. He turned back to Rosa, his tone firm.
"Don't mention to Jade that Amara and Cortney were here. There's nothing going on, but Jade tends to misunderstand. I don't want to cause any more drama. You understand?"
"I understand, sir. Don't you worry. I won't say a word to upset her while she's pregnant." Rosa agreed quickly, then asked about Amara.
"Sir, Ms. Hoyt told me that the way she treated Ma'am before wasn't on purpose. She said she's sick and can't control herself. She showed me her arms... those scars are terrible. What exactly is wrong with her?"
