Chapter 160 The Gilded Invitation
“Disappointed? In what?”
She looked down at the ground, her gaze emp
“I’ve told you before, it’s not what you think between us. Whatever he thinks of me now doesn’t change the fact that he helped me when needed it. I’ll pay him back when the time comes. That’s just basic human decency.”
She looked back up, her eyes filled with mockery for Hudson.
“Besides, didn’t you teach me long ago not to put too much hope in anyone? The higher the expectation, the harder the fall. Since I have no expectations, how could I be disappointed?”
Hudson stared at her.
The love that used to overflow from her eyes had been replaced by a void, seasoned with a hint of loathing.
His heart twinged with pain. His fingers twitched uncontrollably at his side.
After a moment, he looked away.
“Go to your studio if you want. Just remember to come home early. I’ll finish work early too so we can have dinner together.”
The word “home” used to be Jade’s ultimate sanctuary.
Now, she didn’t even want to hear the word.
Ironically, Hudson, who used to treat their house like a temporary hotel, now couldn’t stop talking about it.
How pathetic.
Jade lowered her lashes, hiding the deepening nockery in her eyes.
“Fine.”
Hudson watched Jade enter the studio, then got to his car and dialed Charles Green’s number.
“I remember you outbid everyone for a high-clarity pink diamond at an auction a few days ago?”
Charles wasn’t fully awake yet, his voice sounding lazy. “Yeah. Flawless.”
Hudson demanded, “Bring it to me at noon.”
“Huh?”
Charles sounded confused.
“What do you want it for?”
Hudson said, “Mind your own business.”
Beep. He hung up. His eyes remained fixed on the entrance of the studio.
Jade had thrown away their wedding ring in a fit of anger.
Now that she was pregnant and back home, it was time he gave her a proper replacement.
Afternoon.
“Mr. Harold Robbins’s medical technology venture… a lot of people are fighting for it, right?”
Anthony nodded. “Yeah, but our family isn’t in that field, so I haven’t looked into it. But what does that have to do with you wanting to go?”
Jade bit her lip. She had nothing to hide from him.
“Remember that damaged ancient manuscript I repaired a while back? It was from Mr. Robbins’s personal collection. When I finished, he came to pick it up himself. We talked for quite a while in the lounge, and he seemed to really appreciate my work.
“A friend of mine helped me a lot recently, and he wants that contract. I want to talk to M Robbins and see if I can help tip the scales in his favor.”
Late afternoon, the sun began to set.
The golden light painted the distant mountains and skyscrapers in a warm, amber glow.
The wind swirled fallen leaves along the roadside, and the air was thick with the scent of late autumn.
Jade locked the studio door and stepped outside The beauty of the scene made her pull out her phone to take a photo.
That was when Julian Foster appeared.
He wore a long, charcoal-gray trench coat that made his tall frame look even more commanding. A white undershirt softened his sharp features, giving him an air of elegant warmth.
The bouquet of pink lisianthus in his arms was the only splash of color on him. Vivid and bright.
It was impossible to look away.
Jade’s fingers tightened around her phone.
