Chapter 157 Cold Soup and Bitterness
But she looked at Jade like her own daughter, and her heart broke for her.
She didn’t want to see them drift even further apart, so she finally spoke the truths she had buried for years.
The fire in Hudson’s chest died out instantly. His lips parted, but no words came.
He’d noticed Jade’s efforts back then, but he’d never bothered to look deeper or care.
Now, sitting here alone at a silent table, watching the steam vanish from the food, he realized how lonely it felt.
He sank back into his chair, the gloom in his eyes beginning to dissipate.
“Fine. Take it up to her. Make sure she finishes every bite.”
Rosa breathed a sigh of relief.
“I’m on it.”
Upstairs.
Jade was leaning against the headboard, leafing through some old book restoration files, when Rosa brought the tray in.
“Ma’am, you look a bit peaky. I made some chicken soup with herbs to help your circulation. It’s perfect for the baby, so make sure you drink up.”
“Thank you, Rosa.”
Jade offered a small smile and set her files aside.
“You can put the tray right here.”
Rosa set it down and poured a bowl of soup to let it cool.
“Eat some of the greens first. The soup is still a bit hot,”
“Okay.”
Jade picked up her fork, eating slowly and taking small sips of soup.
Rosa watched her closely. Seeing no signs of nausea, she felt a weight lift and started plotting a way to bridge the gap between the couple.
“You know, the Master was waiting for you downstairs until the food was nearly cold. He almost came up to find you, but I stopped him.”
Jade didn’t stop eating. She just asked casually.
“He got angry, didn’t he?”
It wasn’t a question; it was a statement of fact.
Rosa actually chuckled at that.
“You really do know him best. He was a bit frustrated at first, but when I told him how often you used to wait for him like that, he calmed right down. He told me to bring this up and warned me to make sure you ate enough because you’re too thin. I think he’s finally starting to understand what you went through.”
Jade took a sip of soup. The rich, savory broth suddenly felt oily and sickening on her tongue.
She set the spoon down, wiped her mouth with a napkin, and spoke without any emotion.
“He doesn’t care about my feelings. He’s just afraid the baby isn’t getting enough nutrients.”
