Jeff, noticing the ominous shift in his mood, sipped his clam chowder in cautious silence.
He knew better than to try and read Julian’s mind; the man was an impenetrable fortress.
Jade’s mind was a whirlwind of calculations as she drove home.
The evidence she had secured was already enough to dismantle Amara’s smear campaign.
But whether to show Hudson the photo of Amara kissing Lyndon remained a difficult choice.
She had to decide: keep it as a trump card or use it to shatter Amara’s innocent mask.
One choice would define the end of her marriage.
She pulled into the dim underground garage.
Jade exited the car, but as she reached to close the door, the sound of sprinting footsteps echoed.
Within a heartbeat, the footsteps were right on top of her.
She whipped her head around as a glint of steel sliced through the air toward her.
Jade lunged to the side, trying to dive back into the car, but a hand slammed the door shut.
She looked up into the masked face of the same man in black from last night.
He flicked his wrist, driving a tactical dagger straight at her abdomen.
Jade wrenched her hand back and sprinted blindly toward the
garage exit.
The man in black pursued her relentlessly as Jade fumbled for her phone to call the police.
The line connected, and she fought to keep her voice steady as she gasped out the details.

“Is this the police? I’m the woman from the Sycamore Road stalking case-he’s back and-”
Bang-
Before she could finish, a heavy object slammed into her wrist.
The phone slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the concrete floor.
A heavy boot kicked her from behind, sending her sprawling face-first as gravel tore into her palms.
“Ugh-”
The searing pain made Jade gasp for air.
She tried to roll over, but the cold tip of a dagger was suddenly pressed against her chest.
Jade froze, looking up at the masked assassin in
pure,
unadulterated terror.
“Who are you? Why are you doing this?”
The man said nothing, raising the dagger to deliver a lethal, downward strike.
“No!”
Jade let out a blood-curdling scream and squeezed her eyes shut, her entire body vibrating.
Seconds passed, but the pain didn’t come; instead, the metallic scent of blood filled the air.
Her lashes fluttered as she opened her eyes to see Julian catching the blade with his bare hand. Looking at the scene, Jade felt as if she had been plunged into ice, her lips trembling in silence, Julian spared her a quick glance to ensure she was safe before turning his fury on the attacker.
“Argh-”
The man in black screamed as Julian twisted his arm and drove a knee into his stomach.
Bang-
Julian delivered a final, crushing kick to the man’s vital point, sending him to the ground in agony. Julian’s security detail swarmed the area instantly, pinning the assassin to the pavement.
One of the guards handed Julian a bandage.

Julian acted like pain didn’t exist, wiped the blood from his palm, and offered his hand to Jade.
“Can you stand up?”
