Jarred was just about to take a sip of his tea when Ophelia’s words stopped him cold. He set the cup down in a hurry, his voice almost tumbling out. “I can really ask for anything?”
Ophelia gave him an easy, confident smile. “Of course. If money can fix it, it’s not even a problem for me,” she said. “I’ve heard about everything you’ve been dealing with. As long as you can help me get into the institute, funding for your projects will come through immediately. I promise nothing will hold you up, Jarred.”
Realizing he was showing too much excitement, Jarred tried to compose himself. He cleared his throat, lifting his cup for a quick sip as if that would help him regain some calm.
“This… well, getting into the institute isn’t simple. You probably know already… there’s an assessment. You have to pass it before you’re allowed in.” He eyed her carefully.
Ophelia hadn’t expected him to hedge like this, but she kept her patience. Getting in was all that mattered to her. She met his gaze, all seriousness. “Jarred, whatever your conditions are, just say the word. If I can get my foot in the door, I’ll agree to anything.”
The sincerity in her eyes made Jarred’s heart skip a beat. He felt like the universe had just handed him a golden opportunity, and he was already planning how to keep it. “Well, if you want to skip the exam, there’s only one way. You could become my personal student, but I do have standards. What can you show me? Any papers published in SCI journals or anything like that?”
Jarred already had a plan to get her in, but he wanted to know more about her abilities. That way he could tailor his own demands to match.
“I’ve published two papers and led a research project. All of them were acknowledged by top experts.” No hesitation at all, Ophelia quickly pulled up her portfolio on her phone and handed it over.
