Laurinda reached out and gave Seraphina’s shoulder a gentle tap. Pulled from her thoughts, Seraphina looked at her, hesitated for a moment, then just shook her head. She was feeling all kinds of complicated and really needed to talk to someone.
“It’s fine… It’s getting late. I should get going.” Her voice sounded uneven, like she was holding something back.
With that, Seraphina stood up, grabbed her purse, and hurried out of the room. Laurinda wanted to ask Teddy and Irvin to walk her out, but before she could even open her mouth, Seraphina was already halfway down the hall.
A few minutes later, Adolphus came back with the others. He paused when he saw Laurinda, Teddy, and Irvin hanging around by the entryway, all looking a bit off. “What are you guys doing out here?” he asked, confused.
Laurinda sighed. “We were just saying goodbye to Seraphina. Everything was fine a minute ago while we were playing games, but all of a sudden she just changed. I asked if something was wrong, but she wouldn’t tell me. Then she left in a rush.”
Adolphus pulled a face, but he didn’t seem too worried. He knew Seraphina well enough to think she was probably just having a moment. “Don’t overthink it. I’ll check on her with a call later. Let’s get inside, it’s freezing.”
He put his arm around Laurinda and guided her in. Once they were in the living room, he had her sit on the couch, then grabbed a blanket and draped it over her legs. His voice softened as he asked, “What’s on your schedule for tomorrow?”
Laurinda leaned into the armrest and propped her chin on her hand, looking at him with curious eyes. “Got a lab exam. Why? Did something come up?”
“Foley messaged. Lamont asked him to pass along a note for you to get back to him whenever you can.”
Laurinda raised an eyebrow, the hint of a smirk teasing her lips. “Is it about the Riley family?”
“Foley didn’t say much, just that things are getting tense on Mistfall Atoll,” Egan chimed in from nearby. He’d been keeping tabs on the atoll for a while now.
