Bonnie felt her chest tighten. She squeezed Laurinda’s hand and pulled her to sit beside her on the bed, dropping her voice to a whisper.
“What happened? Are they bothering you again?”
“No, nothing like that. I just found out who was behind your accident. Kenny sent someone over with a so-called gift. He called it a peace offering, but really, it was just a clear provocation. He wanted me to know he’s keeping tabs on me.”
“I’ve already planned a special surprise for them. I’m inviting them to watch fireworks with us on New Year’s Eve.”
Bonnie’s eyes were full of worry as she looked at Laurinda. She didn’t want Laurinda to mess up her plans because of this. Without realizing it, she squeezed Laurinda’s hand even tighter.
“Laurinda, maybe you should hold off. We can take our time with this. Your plan is too important to risk…”
“I’m not messing anything up. I’m not going to take their lives. I just want a little payback. For my parents, for Farr, for my mentor, and for you.”
Laurinda’s eyes grew red at the corners. She’d thought she could handle all of this calmly, that she could wait until she turned twenty and then hit them with something big.
But now she realized that waiting just made those people bolder. So she’d take a little revenge early.
She also wanted to remind them that she was still 005, the one who could lose control at any moment.
Once everything was packed, Harrell carried Bonnie out to the car. Arrow, Bonnie’s private doctor, was coming with them too.
The butler glanced at the car, stuffed to the brim, and then turned to Laurinda.
“Don’t worry, Laurinda. There’s another car on the way.”
“Alright. You take them home first. I’ll wait here. I might be back a little late. I need to drop something off at the lab for Irvin. He’s heading back to the capital this afternoon.”
Yesterday, Laurinda had gotten New Year’s gifts from Edna and Cathleen. She’d prepared a gift in return and wanted Irvin to take it back for her. It was only fair.
“Okay. Take care. Call if you need anything.”
Laurinda didn’t believe for a second that he didn’t know about Bonnie’s accident. He had to be aware of the Gates family’s dirty work.
She studied his outfit, thinking that Finn must have finally admitted who Harden was. Finn needed someone to take over, especially since they hadn’t found Fabian.
“I didn’t realize Bonnie was well enough to go home already. That’s great. I visited her before with some classmates. She’s recovering fast.”
Laurinda couldn’t figure out what Harden was getting at, so she didn’t answer. She didn’t want to say a single word to him.
Seeing her go quiet, Harden just smiled, stepped a little closer, and went on.
“I’m actually here to see Alice. After Fabian disappeared, she got sick. Then she broke her leg a few days ago. She’s here in the hospital too.”
Laurinda turned to look at Harden, searching his face for a clue about why he was telling her all this, but she couldn’t make out anything unusual.
