“That’s enough,” Edna interjected at just the right moment. “We’ll be at Cathleen’s wedding. Whether or not we let Nelly have her way—that’s between your grandfather and me. What he said today was out of line. Laurinda, on behalf of Jed, I owe you an apology.” Her words took the wind out of Irvin’s anger, and he glanced at Laurinda, guilt written across his face.
Laurinda met Irvin’s eyes for a moment, then turned her attention back to Edna. “It’s all right. I’ve never cared much about status, anyway. Whether or not someone puts me in my place doesn't really matter. Even if they could, what difference does it make? It’s not going to change the way I live.”
She wore the most relaxed, contented smile. Laurinda truly wasn’t bothered by any of this.
The room lapsed into silence; no one had anything more to say about the matter. Adolphus deftly withdrew the silver needle from Jed’s arm, checked his body, and then jotted down a prescription, which he handed to Irvin.
“Have this filled—one week’s course. If Mr. Main decides to take it, that’s up to him.” Then he extended a hand to Laurinda. Since it was clear they wouldn’t be staying for dinner, Adolphus was eager to take her home, worried she might be hungry.
Laurinda took his hand and got to her feet. She nodded politely to the elders around them. “Please, carry on. We’ll be heading out.”
“I’ll walk you to the door,” Irvin said, tucking the prescription safely away.
At that moment, Felix stood, glanced at Raines, and said, “Wait up, I’ll head back with you all.”
Adolphus paused, offered Felix his arm, and the two of them walked out together, Laurinda and Irvin following a couple of steps behind.
