Grace was stunned for a long moment after being rejected by OrionVale.
She hesitated for a long time before pulling up a number, wanting to call for some small comfort.
But the moment she dialed, a notification popped up: her service had been disconnected.
Only then did she remember that this number was a supplementary line on Ethan’s account.
He had cut her off.
Grace laughed at herself, then dug out a bank card she had from her college days and walked out the door to pay her phone bill.
At the bank, she handed her card to the teller.
“Hi, I’d like to pay a bill.”
The teller took the card, swiped it, and a confused expression crossed his face.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, but your card... has been frozen.”
“What?” Grace thought she had misheard.
“Your bank card has been frozen,” the teller repeated patiently.
Grace stood there, frozen herself, unable to process what he’d said.
That card held all the scholarship money and patent transfer fees she had earned in college. It was the last of her personal assets from before her marriage.
When on earth had Ethan frozen her card?
A wave of panic and rage seized her. She rushed out of the bank, wandering the streets in a daze.
She wanted to go home, to find a place to hide.
But where was home?
The Wards? Cassian would surely just yell at her again.
And the house she shared with Ethan... she didn’t even know the code to get in.
She raised her hand and hailed a cab.
“Silvercrest Residences, please.”
It was a small apartment she had rented to pull all-nighters for her research. She had paid a full year’s rent in advance.
When they arrived, the meter read: thirty-six dollars.
Grace took out her phone.
“Scan here,” the driver said.
She used her card ‘Pay.’
