Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 656

After dinner, they headed to the auction.

It wasn’t early.

Most of the early arrivals had come straight from work and were already seated.

Seeing how crowded it was up front, Lillian didn’t feel like walking to the front and drawing too much attention.

She pointed to some seats nearby, thinking the back row would be fine.

It had been a long time since she’d been to an auction.

Besides, she didn't have her eye on anything in particular, so sitting a bit further back didn’t matter.

Their VIP seats were in the very front row, but since Lillian didn't mind sitting in the back, Leonard joined her there.

They took a spot in the last row, leaving their prime viewing seats empty.

They arrived just as the auction began. An item was already on display, but a quick glance told Lillian she wasn't interested.

Leonard had come to bid on one specific item, but he wouldn't be raising the paddle himself. Ethan was already seated up front, ready to bid on his behalf.

Leonard leaned in and whispered to Lillian, “If you see anything you like, we’ll get it. I haven’t given you a proper gift yet.”

Lillian wasn’t concerned about that. “You’ve already given me the most precious thing in the world. No other gift can compare.”

To save her, the first phase of treatment had nearly cost Leonard his life.

That kind of bond, forged in a life-or-death situation, couldn't be replaced by any material gift.

“I know, but this is different,” Leonard said. “Look in your jewelry box. Besides the pieces your mother and grandmother left you, do you have anything that’s truly your own?”

Lillian paused, taken aback. Leonard must have seen her mother’s and grandmother’s jewelry when it was moved over, so he knew she hadn’t added any new pieces of her own.

Everything she had from her time with the Mercer family was left behind when she was cast out.
