"Don't be cheeky. You're about to get married yourself, and you'll be the wife of a wealthy man. You need to be more careful with your words."
Bella replied, "I know. Sebastian is planning to marry me, but I still have a small concern. I've been to the Blake family's old residence and met the two elders of the Blake family. They don't seem to like me very much. Mom, do you know why?"
Sabrina heard this and knew the answer right away.
Why wouldn't the Blake family elders like Bella? The reason was simple enough.
The Blake family was a very traditional, wealthy family, and they had their own set of standards for choosing a daughter-in-law.
It was just like how Martin's mother had been critical of her. It all came down to background.
Although she was now married to Martin, Bella was not born into a legitimate wealthy family. She was the daughter she had brought into the Mercer family. In the end, she couldn't compare to someone like Lillian, who had a noble status.
"It all comes down to my own issues. Bella, I'm sorry. I couldn't give you a respectable background and status.
Now, even when you're talking about marriage, you still have to be seen as inferior. As for the old couple from the Blake family, even if Martin were to speak up, it probably wouldn't make a difference.
The Blake family is an old, established wealthy family. Although they had their own issues, with Sebastian being an illegitimate son, the couple's love for each other has endured, and they've weathered all storms together.
They don't give Martin much face. They do have a good relationship with the old lady of our family, but because of that good relationship, they like Lillian even more."
Sabrina was not ignorant of the situation. It was because she understood it so well that she felt her daughter was at a disadvantage. Her daughter was smart, beautiful, and highly capable. In what way was she not better than Lillian? Yet, in this situation, she was the one at a great disadvantage. And this disadvantage was something that couldn't even be remedied.
Bella herself knew that if she had a good background, her relationship with Sebastian wouldn't have had so many obstacles. They might have already been married by now. The thought made her even more angry.
"Mom, does this mean I'll never be able to win over the Blake family's two elders?"
"If you can't win them over, then so be it. When you get married, you won't be living with those two old bones anyway. If you can get along, fine. If not, you and Sebastian can move out. With Sebastian's current wealth, what kind of luxurious villa couldn't he buy for you? Why would you have to live in the Blake family's old villa? Living on your own, with no one meddling in your life, would be much better and more freeing."
Bella smiled. "Mom, you're so smart."
"I've been fighting this battle for half my life. Look at this family now. Doesn't everyone listen to me?
