Justin nodded, taking off his soaked suit jacket and draping it over his arm. “Stephen, have you ever met Mrs. Cooper before?”
Stephen shook his head. This was his first time seeing Emma as well.
Evan had always been incredibly protective of her, never bringing her to important dinners or events. As a result, very few people in their circle had ever actually met Emma.
Justin fell silent, an image of Evan and his wife giving an interview outside the police station flashing through his mind.
“Alright, just be more careful next time. Don’t let something like today happen again, you hear?”
His younger brother was simple by nature and didn’t overthink things. Realizing this, Stephen’s expression softened as he reminded him once more.
“Yeah, I know, Stephen!”
“Go get changed.”
Justin smiled, and the two brothers walked away.

Meanwhile, Evan was rushing Emma to the hospital.
Ms. Miller drove while Evan held Emma in the back seat.
“Emma, Emma…”
He continued to gently shake the unconscious woman in his arms, but he got no response.
Emma’s face was an unnatural, deathly pale. Her hair and dress were soaked, still dripping with water. She lay limp in Evan’s arms, unresponsive no matter how much he tried to rouse her.
By now, Evan was in a complete panic.
He had never seen her like this—so lifeless, so still that she wouldn’t wake no matter what he did.
