Evan felt a wave of exhaustion.
At first, he had been drawn to Melissa’s face. Later, he came to appreciate that she was sensible, knew her place, and was well-behaved, not at all like other women who became entitled after receiving a little attention. She’d been with him for a while but had never asked for anything, except for help with her father’s illness. Until this point, Evan’s impression of her had been quite good.
But today, when she couldn’t reach him, she had taken it upon herself to contact Jason and ask him to get in touch.
That displeased Evan. She had crossed a line.
On the phone, Melissa was still talking, but Evan didn’t hear a word. When she finally paused, he asked, “Are you done?”
“Y-yes, I’m done,” Melissa said, a little confused.
Evan gave a cold “hmm” and fell silent for a moment before continuing. “Don’t worry about your father’s medical bills. From now on, you should just focus on taking care of him.”
The implication was clear: Don’t contact me again.
The sudden statement left Melissa stunned. She hadn’t fully processed it yet. “Mr. Cooper, what… what do you mean by that?”
Evan held the lit cigarette between his fingers, staring out into the heavy night. “You should focus on your studies,” he said coolly. “Don’t go to that kind of place anymore. I’ll pay for all of your father’s medical expenses. You don’t have to pay me back. Consider it a charitable donation.”
Listening on the phone, Melissa struggled to control her emotions and keep from sobbing. “I’m sorry, Mr. Cooper. I don’t know if yesterday’s news caused you trouble. If it did, I apologize. As for the money… I’ll find a job and pay you back as soon as I can. Thank you. Thank you for all your help during this time. I am eternally grateful…”
As she spoke, tears streamed down her face.
