Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 5

The living room was pitch black, no lights on.

She assumed Evan was in the study or had gone to the bedroom.

Emma walked over and flipped the switch. To her surprise, the light revealed Evan sitting on the sofa, his face dark as he stared coldly at her.

"Where have you been? Why are you back so late?"

Evan felt a surge of irritation just looking at Emma. Even though he was the one who hadn't been home in three months, guilt perhaps made him the first to start questioning her.

Seeing him, however, Emma didn't seem particularly surprised.

She walked calmly through the living room, saying, "I wasn't feeling well, so I went to the hospital to get some medication."

She put the leftover takeout in the refrigerator.

She hung her jacket on a hanger in the bedroom.

Evan frowned. It was rare for Emma to speak to him so calmly. He was surprised, but his face remained impassive. "Well, the weather's been changing. But you're a grown woman. Can't you even take care of yourself?"

Emma ignored him. She closed the bedroom door, walked into the bathroom, undressed, and turned on the shower.

She was dying of a terminal illness, and not only had Evan failed to notice, he could only offer condescending remarks about her inability to care for herself.

Emma let out a bitter laugh. The hot water cascaded over her body, and though it should have been warm and soothing, all she felt was an invasive chill.

Even the owner of a diner she hadn't seen in years noticed she was thinner, but the man who had once shared her bed every night hadn't seen a thing.

No, not every night. They hadn't slept in the same bed for three months and nine days.

When she came out of the shower, there was someone else in the large, rustic bed.

Under the warm, dim light of the wall sconce, the man was sitting up against the headboard, his head lowered as he idly flipped through a book.

Evan was a handsome man. He had always possessed a sharp, refined look, and the years had only added a layer of enigmatic depth, making him appear even more coolly attractive.
