Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 47

He said it was good, but his face was utterly placid.

Seeing his expression, Melissa’s hopeful heart sank. She lowered her gaze in disappointment, unsure of what to say.

“Mr. Cooper, is my cooking not good?”

In truth, Melissa was an excellent cook. Her sweet-glazed ribs could rival those of a five-star chef. However, while Evan was from the south, he didn’t like sweet food; he loved spicy.

Noticing the disappointment on Melissa’s face, Evan didn’t offer his usual words of comfort. Instead, his mind uncontrollably drifted to the first time Emma had cooked for him.

Back then, they had just arrived in Averton City, crammed into a tiny basement apartment. They worked from dawn till dusk, crushed under the weight of the city’s ridiculously high cost of living.

To save money, Emma would go to the market every afternoon after work to buy discounted vegetables and cook at home.

She had never cooked before when they were in Riverside Millford. She only started learning after she was with him.

To this day, Evan still remembered that first meal: spicy stir-fried pork and vinegar-sautéed cabbage.

She had cut three of her fingers while slicing the meat. When Evan came home from work and saw it, his heart ached for her, but she acted as if nothing had happened, laughing as she pulled him to the table, urging him to try the food.

The stir-fried pork wasn’t salty enough, and the cabbage was burnt.

But to Evan, it was the best meal he had ever eaten. Even after tasting all kinds of gourmet food, he would still find himself in the dead of night, longing for that bland stir-fried pork and burnt cabbage.

His thoughts returned to the present. Seeing the sad and self-reproachful look on the young woman’s face, Evan managed a faint smile. “Don’t overthink it. It’s delicious.”

With that, he picked up his fork and, paying Melissa no further mind, continued to eat the ribs.
