Evan stayed with Melissa at the hospital all night.
Mr. Carter’s kidney transplant was a success. After a long surgery, he was finally out of danger and moved to the ICU.
Melissa cried tears of joy and threw her arms around Evan in a public embrace. Realizing she had overstepped, she quickly let go, took a step back, and shyly kept her head down.
The young woman stood with her head lowered, her cheeks faintly pink. Despite being up all night, her skin was still smooth and fair, showing no signs of fatigue.
Youth really was a wonderful thing.
Evan reached out and gently pulled her toward him. The next second, Melissa stumbled back into his arms, caught off guard.
“Mr. Cooper…”
Melissa shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
Seeing this, Jason cautiously adjusted his glasses and lowered his head.
The sweet scent of the young college student filled the air. Evan’s hand rested lightly on her waist as he gave a soft laugh.
“Mr. Cooper, I’m so grateful for everything last night. Thank you. I don’t know how I can ever repay you…”
While the girl in his arms expressed her gratitude in a delicate voice, Evan’s unfocused gaze drifted to the window at the end of the long hallway, his thoughts a thousand miles away.
He couldn’t hear another word Melissa said. His mind was consumed with wondering how Emma was doing back at home.
She was still sick, her fever had just broken, and she had no appetite last night. He wondered how she was now, if she was feeling any better.
With that thought, Evan took a step back and pulled his phone from his slacks. He said to Melissa in a low voice, “Excuse me.”
Then he walked straight to the end of the hall, standing before the window he had been staring at, and dialed Emma’s number.
The phone rang and rang.
