Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 285

Emma followed Nathan into his office.

Only after their figures had completely disappeared behind the door did Evan retract his gaze and turn to walk in the opposite direction.

Jason lowered his head and trotted to keep up with him.

“Mr. Cooper, Mr. Carter’s room is 1507. He was transferred from the ICU to a regular room last night.”

It was only after receiving a call from the hospital about overdue payments this morning that Jason learned Thomas had been moved to the intensive care unit a week ago due to a sudden decline in his condition.

He informed his boss the moment he received the news.

It had been nearly a week since Melissa had left Kingsbridge Park that morning.

Evan hadn't tried to contact her during that time. It seemed their relationship had come to a silent, unacknowledged standstill.

In the period right after his divorce from Emma and the loss of their child, Evan had genuinely developed feelings for Melissa.

After two years of arguing with Emma, he had long forgotten what the warmth of a home felt like, and Melissa’s appearance had conveniently filled that void.

She was obedient, sensible, and quiet. She was at his beck and call, never bothering him.

She would appear whenever he needed her, and when he didn’t, she would wait quietly for him.

This feeling of being in complete control was why Evan had grown fond of Melissa. But somewhere along the line, the once-obedient girl had started to change. She became willful, demanding, and would even throw tantrums and get angry with him.

Upon hearing Jason's report, Evan immediately dialed Melissa’s number without hesitation.

But a full bucket of hot water was too heavy. She had shuffled in, bent over, completely unaware that someone else was in the room.

Not until her peripheral vision caught sight of a pair of familiar alligator leather shoes on the floor in front of her.

Melissa froze. The heavy bucket in her hand slipped and crashed to the floor.

With a loud thud, a full bucket of hot water spilled out, instantly creating a steaming pool across the floor.

The hot water soaked through Melissa’s cheap canvas shoes, making her flinch from the scalding heat, but she didn’t react otherwise.

She remained frozen in the same position she'd been in while carrying the bucket, until the rapidly spreading water stained the tip of Evan's immaculate shoe and crept towards the metal leg of the hospital bed.
