He was sure he had said those exact words somewhere before…
During the first few years of starting his business, he was constantly coming home late or not at all, either entertaining clients or working overtime. Back then, Emma would make dinner and wait for him, full of anticipation, but she often waited from dinnertime until dawn for a man who never showed up.
At first, she kept her feelings to herself, never saying a word. Even though he could tell something was wrong, he was either too busy or too exhausted to ask.
Then came the time he promised to be home for dinner, only to break that promise again, staying out the entire night. When he finally returned in the early morning, Emma’s frustration finally boiled over.
That day, as he dragged his exhausted body back to their small, run-down apartment, she had confronted him, crying, and they had a huge fight. She said she had been understanding and patient enough. She knew how hard things were for him, but she just couldn’t bear the constant cycle of hope and disappointment anymore.
Evan had just pulled an all-nighter and was physically and mentally drained. He knew he was at fault, knew that work and networking had consumed all his energy.
He had realized that he and Emma were talking less and less. The only time they seemed to connect was in bed.
Seeing her cry was painful for him, too. But even as tired and frustrated as he was, he had forced himself to push down his exhaustion and patiently comfort her.
He remembered saying the exact same thing to her then: “Of course I was coming back. You’re here waiting for me. I’ll always come back…”
Evan’s memory was a blur. As he held the woman in his arms, he was completely oblivious to her change in demeanor.
The moment Evan had pulled her into his embrace, Melissa smelled it: the scent of another woman.
