Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 259

Melissa’s call was not quiet. Evan heard it, and so did Emma and her mother, who happened to be looking at condiments nearby.

Karen Hayes was holding a container of salt when she heard the name “Evan.” She immediately looked up at her daughter. “Did I just hear someone call out Evan’s name? Did you hear it?”

Emma had heard it, of course, but she just smiled and tried to cover it up. “No, I don’t think so. You must have misheard… Let’s go this way and see what else they have.”

Karen furrowed her brow, and though she was suspicious, she didn’t press the issue and let her daughter push her along.

Emma deliberately guided her mother in the opposite direction of the voice, but as soon as they left the condiment aisle, they saw him—Evan, standing in the middle of an open space in the supermarket.

He had his back to them, still looking around.

Emma frowned, thinking this was bad. He was probably here with his new girlfriend. If her mother saw them together, she would be furious.

With that thought, she grabbed her mother’s hand to lead her away, but she was a second too late. Evan turned around and saw them.

“Mrs. Hayes, Emma…”

Evan walked steadily toward them. Emma thought she saw a flash of surprise—or was it pleasure?—in his eyes.

“What a coincidence…”

Emma glanced from her mother to Evan, then forced an awkward but polite smile.

To her, Evan was now like a vaguely familiar acquaintance who had become a stranger again.

She really had no interest in him or his new romance and just wanted to get her mother away from the situation.

However, upon seeing Evan, Karen Hayes first showed a flicker of surprise, then her brow knitted together. “Evan, what are you doing here?”
