Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 207

"Mom."

Eric didn't answer his mother, but slowly descended the rest of the stairs.

He walked over to his mother's side. Seeing she was still busy, picking up the fourth plate to serve, he finally couldn't hold it in any longer. He gently took her hand and said softly, "Don't make a plate for my sister. She's… gone."

For a moment, Mrs. Hayes didn't register what Eric had said.

She stopped what she was doing and looked at her son, confused. "What are you talking about?"

"I… I'm saying… my sister went back. She's on a plane tonight. She's gone back to Averton City!"

Unable to restrain himself, Eric blurted it all out in a rush.

Hearing this, Mr. Hayes, who had been busy, also froze in place, unable to process the news for a moment.

Mrs. Hayes stared blankly for a few seconds, then swiftly pushed her son aside. Without a word, she ran up to the second floor, rushed to Emma's bedroom, and threw open the closed door.

In the neat and tidy little room, the quilt and pillow were arranged just as they always were, but the suitcase in the corner and the bag of medications on the dresser were both gone.

Mrs. Hayes stood frozen in the doorway, staring at the room as tears slowly welled up in her eyes.

Mr. Hayes, who had followed her up, came up behind his wife. When he saw his daughter's empty room, a chill shot through him. He was still holding the spatula, and the sweat on his brow from cooking was now met with a draft that felt ice-cold.

Emma was on the plane home. She had left that afternoon while her mother was out buying the chicken.

Only Eric was there to see her off as she left with her suitcase.

Looking at her brother's red-rimmed eyes and sad face, Emma had suddenly felt a wave of despair. It was heartbreaking. She wondered if this departure would be the last time she ever saw her family.
