Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 20

Evan fumbled for an excuse. "I... I just lost my head for a moment. You said you wanted to divorce me... How was I supposed to just listen to that? Don't you know how much I love you? If you don't want me anymore, then what am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do? You tell me, okay..."

As he spoke, Evan lowered his head, leaning in to kiss the corner of Emma's mouth.

But Emma didn't want him near. She turned her head slightly, deftly avoiding the kiss.

Seeing her still evading him, Evan didn't seem to care. He simply cupped her face with both hands, lowered his head, and pressed her against the wall in a deep kiss.

Warm water streamed down from above. Emma's back was cold against the tiles, but her front was burning hot. It was a collision of ice and fire.

The kiss deepened, stealing her breath completely. Emma tilted her head back slightly, her eyes glazed over, but a final thread of consciousness remained.

She pressed her hands against Evan's chest, her voice choked with a mix of desperation and pleading. "Don't do this, Evan. I... I don't want to..."

But Evan, consumed by desire, was in no state to listen. Two hours ago, when he had opened the door to find her gone, when he had searched everywhere and couldn't find her, he had nearly believed he had lost her forever. He had walked into the nearest police station, frantic and about to file a report, when he finally saw her, unconscious and curled up on a bench.

Seeing Emma again in that moment, Evan couldn't describe the feeling. All the despair, confusion, fear, and cowardice he had felt while she was missing vanished, replaced by the pure joy and relief of having her back.

In the eleven long years they had been together, everything about Emma had seeped into his very bones. The thought of them separating was worse than death.
