Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 17

The woman's long, wavy hair fell to her waist. On a cold, late autumn night, she was wearing only a wine-red, hip-length lace nightdress and walking barefoot, her steps so unsteady it looked like she could collapse at any second.

Sitting in the driver's seat, Nathan stared at the figure in the distance, his long fingers tapping unconsciously on the steering wheel.

Honk! Honk honk!

The car behind him blared its horn, snapping Nathan back to reality. He noticed the light had turned green.

He released the parking brake, stepped on the gas, and the car sped forward.

Soon, the figure disappeared from his rearview mirror.

Emma didn't know how long she had been walking. The colder she got, the farther she walked. By the time she reached the bottom of the mountain, she was completely numb. Her body was stiff, and walking had become a purely reflexive action.

Averton City was in the north, and although it was only late autumn, the temperature at night could drop to just a few degrees above freezing.

At this hour, the streets were empty, save for a few passersby who stared at her with a mixture of curiosity and pity, as if she were an animal in a zoo.

Emma had never imagined she could be this miserable in her entire life.

When she had joyfully followed Evan out of Riverside Millford all those years ago, she never would have thought that one day he would throw her out of their home so heartlessly.

She remembered a quote she'd seen online—Never doubt that feelings are real, but remember that real feelings can change in an instant.

She used to think it was a joke. Now...

Her body grew colder, and her feet were no longer listening to her. The asphalt was inevitably littered with small stones and debris that would have been sharp underfoot, but Emma couldn't feel a thing.

All she felt was cold. So cold. The air she exhaled was frigid, and her body felt like it was packed with ice.
