Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 155

“So, you’re back?”

Emma slowly entered the main room. Before she could speak, Mrs. Hayes spoke first.

Her tone was remarkably flat, completely devoid of the anger and frustration Emma had anticipated.

Emma’s hands tightened on the hem of her coat. She bit her lip, swallowing a lump in her throat several times before she managed to force out the word, “Mom…”

It had been so many years. Her mother looked so different from her memories.

She didn’t used to have so much gray hair, or so many wrinkles around her eyes. The mother in her memory always wore simple clothes, her hair tied back neatly in a low ponytail. She rarely smiled; she was strict, but she was also young.

Mrs. Hayes sat in the main chair of the room. Her gaze passed over Emma and settled on Evan, who had followed her in. Her expression grew cold, mirroring the one Emma had given Mrs. Jenkins earlier.

“What is he doing here?”

Mrs. Hayes was looking at Evan, but the question was for Emma.

“Didn’t your father say only you were coming back?” Mrs. Hayes pulled her gaze back to her daughter, her voice still calm. “What is he here for?”

“…Mom.”

Before Emma could answer, Evan stepped forward and addressed Mrs. Hayes.

He and Emma had been married for years, so by all rights, calling her “Mom” was appropriate, but—

“I’m not your mother, Evan. You only have one. Don’t get confused.”

Mrs. Hayes’s expression had completely darkened, her tone turning icy.
