Jason got up early today. Instead of rushing to the office as usual, he turned his car around and drove toward The Heights, a residential community on the mountainside south of the city.
As soon as he arrived, Mrs. Alvarez opened the door. After a brief greeting, Jason went upstairs to find his boss.
“Mr. Cooper.”
Evan and Emma were both in the upstairs hallway. Emma was checking the luggage they were taking back to Riverside Millford.
She had called her family the night before.
She hadn't been home once in all these years. Her mother was still angry with her for eloping with Evan, so Emma had only dared to secretly contact her father.
When he heard she was coming back, her father was first shocked, then overjoyed to the point of tears.
When he heard she was bringing a lot of things, Mr. Hayes had simply said over the phone, “You don’t need to bring anything. Just having you home is enough to make me happy.”
Her father might have said that, but Emma felt the things she had prepared were still necessary.
It had been too many years since she'd been back, and in all her life, she had never fulfilled her duties as a daughter. It wasn't that she hadn't tried to send things or money home before, but everything she sent, and every deposit she made into their bank account, was always returned in full.
Back when she left with Evan, her mother had given her a harsh ultimatum: if she walked out that door, she should never come back and no longer consider herself their daughter.
Emma had been young then. Her parents were always busy, so she grew up with her grandmother. After her younger brother was born, the distance between her and her parents grew. She always felt they didn't love her, that they only loved her brother. So when her mother said those cutting words, she was both heartbroken and unwilling to back down. In the end, she chose to leave without looking back.
When she left, only her grandmother had secretly come to the station to see her off.
