Evan held the fruit platter and sat beside her, his eyes fixed on the TV, seemingly oblivious to her discomfort.
Emma considered for a moment before swallowing the apple. However, when Evan speared a piece of mango and offered it to her, she shook her head. "I don't want any."
Hearing she didn't want mango, Evan switched back to the apple he had just fed her.
Emma shook her head again, then hugged her pillow and shifted further away from him on the sofa.
If her refusal of the mango could have been chalked up to a simple preference, her subsequent rejection of the apple and her deliberate move to create distance made her intentions clear: she wanted to be far away from him.
Evan's hand paused. That familiar feeling of hurt and frustration began to rise in his chest again.
However, he didn't lash out. He simply placed the fruit platter he was holding back on the coffee table.
The two of them sat like that, watching television with a gap between them large enough for three or four people to sit in.
With Evan next to her, watching TV felt completely uncomfortable.
Evan must have noticed. After a few more minutes, he stood up and went to the study on the second floor.
As soon as he left, Emma let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. She settled back into her previous lazy posture and used the remote to rewind to the part she had missed.
After finishing the episode, she started to feel sleepy. The guest room on the second floor didn't have its own bathroom. Figuring Evan would be in the study for a while, she gathered her toiletries and went into the master bedroom.
She took a long, comfortable hot shower and came out in her pajamas, only to find the very person who "shouldn't be out of the study" lying on the bed. She was stunned.
Evan had a habit of reading before bed.
He was wearing a pair of thin, gold-rimmed glasses and gray silk pajamas, leaning against the headboard with a night lamp casting a soft glow beside him. A thick finance book rested in his hands, and he was just turning a page.
