Declan offered a measured explanation.
"Her name is Delilah Moreno. She's the daughter of a close family friend."
"She studied abroad and only moved back two months ago."
"Her parents asked me to help her network and show her around. It's hard to say no to family friends."
Maeve let out a harsh laugh.
"By that logic, if her parents wanted her to marry a guy like you, would you just agree to walk her down the aisle because it's 'hard to say no'?"
He coughed awkwardly.
"Marriage is a serious commitment, not a game."
"Do your parents even know Naomi exists?" Maeve demanded.
"Naomi and I aren't at the 'meet the parents' stage yet," he replied smoothly.
Maeve leaned in, relentless.
"So you admit she's just a fling to you?"
Declan could clearly see the fury flashing in her eyes.
"Miss Vance, the relationship between Naomi and me is... complicated."
They treated each other as casual partners. They grabbed drinks, had fun, and shared a bed.
Neither had pushed for anything more serious, and both seemed perfectly content with the unspoken arrangement.
When they were busy, it was entirely normal for them to go days without speaking.
Personally, he really liked Naomi.
They clicked. They had similar hobbies, endless things to talk about, and absolutely incredible physical chemistry.
But when it came to a permanent commitment like marriage, a man of his standing didn't always have total freedom of choice.
The tense silence was broken when Delilah walked over, holding her plate.
Declan smoothly introduced Maeve as an old friend.
The moment Delilah laid eyes on Maeve's stunningly beautiful face, alarm bells went off in her head.
A woman's intuition kicked in, telling her to stake her claim immediately before someone snatched up the premium boyfriend her parents had secured for her.
She deliberately linked her arm through Declan's.
It was a blatant physical declaration: This man is mine.
