Maeve finally deigned to look at her.
"Speak English," Maeve said coolly. "That nonsense doesn't translate."
Natalia straightened, taking on a lecturing tone.
"In a respectable household, a junior doesn't start eating until their elders have given the nod."
Maeve paused mid-bite and stared at her like she'd just heard something profoundly stupid.
"So if the elder back home happens to be mute," Maeve said, "do the younger ones just starve to death?"
Then she chewed slowly, savoring the food like she had all the time in the world.
Ariana nearly laughed out loud.
Miss Vance really was sharp in the most lovable way. No wonder Andres was so taken with her.
Natalia hadn't expected Maeve to refuse to play by the script. She was searching for another angle when Hans appeared—unannounced—holding a beautifully wrapped box.
He offered Ariana a token greeting, then walked straight to Maeve.
"This is a gift Mr. Andres asked me to deliver. Please take a look, Miss Vance."
He set the elegant box in front of her.
Even without knowing what was inside, the packaging alone was enough to make someone's heart itch with curiosity.
Maeve didn't slow her breakfast at all. She tilted her chin at the box.
"What is it?"
Hans didn't bother avoiding anyone's gaze. He opened the lid right there in front of everyone.
Inside lay an enormous pink diamond.
It hadn't been cut yet—still raw, still wild, with a few streaks of grime clinging to the surface.
Hans hastily wiped it clean, smiling awkwardly.
"My apologies, Miss Vance. This diamond was flown into Aethelburg early this morning."
"Mr. Andres didn't even get a chance to see it himself before he told me to bring it straight to you."
He continued, delivering the official explanation with practiced smoothness.
