The Hart family still had possible paths through other houses. Landon had made sure of that.
Corbin wasn't naïve—he saw the calculation immediately.
The White family's influence in Aethelburg had been swelling for a long time, and Corbin had even heard whispers that Andres had connections on the government side as well.
Corbin was a businessman. He'd learned early that survival depended on picking the right side.
If he wanted to stay tied to the massive power of the White family, he had to make his loyalty to Andres unmistakable.
Andres gave a small, tired smile. "As long as you still treat me like a friend," he said, "then we're friends for life."
Michael, far less calculating, rolled his eyes. "Don't say dumb stuff. We've always been friends."
By the time everyone dispersed, it was already ten at night.
On the way back, Maeve opened her notes app and carefully added up the donation total.
Five hundred a round didn't sound like much. But with all the games stacked together, it had climbed into the hundreds of thousands.
Maeve grinned so wide it practically hurt. "I just finished next month's assignment early."
Andres laughed despite himself. "Your ‘assignment' next month isn't fundraising."
He glanced at her. "You're supposed to come to the estate and help me reconfigure the layout and energy of the place."
Maeve froze. The smile slowly slipped into a blank, confused stare as she looked at the number on her calculator.
"So… everything I did tonight was pointless?"
It was the first time Andres had ever seen that kind of dazed, almost cute expression on her.
And strangely, the agitation in his chest eased.
He reached over and pinched her cheek, gentle and indulgent. "I know you've got a lot going on lately. If you're stretched too thin, I'll hire someone else to handle the estate this weekend."
Maeve shot him a look. "I'm joking. And you took it seriously?"
She huffed softly. "Relax. If I promise something, I do it."
"Just like tonight. I told you I'd kick Landon out of that little circle."
