Michael nodded.
"The short version? Maeve's mom was Luka Morales's wife. Anya's mom was the mistress who clawed her way into the position."
"When Maeve's mom found out about the affair, she couldn't live with it. She left the Morales family more than a decade ago and took Maeve with her—walked away with nothing."
"As for Anya…" Michael's eyes hardened. "She enjoys the Morales family money and influence while also looking for ways to destroy Maeve."
"And Sarah…"
He glanced at Landon. "Yeah. She and Anya are best friends."
Michael didn't elaborate further.
On the surface, he was still giving Landon a sliver of dignity.
But privately, he was disappointed.
Michael and Corbin came from similar situations—both sons of first wives, both made awkward and vulnerable when their fathers remarried. Their lives looked glamorous on the outside, but if you looked closer, the cracks ran deep.
Maybe that was why they instinctively felt a sense of recognition in Maeve.
Landon looked genuinely stunned now.
"Miss Vance, you're imagining things. I'm not that petty."
He hadn't brought Nevaeh to fight Sarah's or Anya's battles.
But Maeve was determined to nail him to that narrative like it was a public execution.
Maeve tipped her head.
"Then I'm curious. If you didn't bring Miss Mendoza here to 'stand up' for your girlfriend's best friend…"
"What was your purpose?"
Landon looked like he'd been spun in circles.
"I already said. Old classmates catching up."
Maeve didn't let him breathe.
"My Whitty very clearly doesn't want to catch up with this 'old classmate.'"
Nevaeh tried to speak again, but Maeve cut her off with a glance.
"There's something Whitty said that's true," Maeve went on, tone casual and dangerous. "I have high standards about cleanliness."
