Chapter 496: Meetup II

Fiona and Heronica, Athena saw, as the two figures raised their face caps a little bit, offering their faces to the little-to-no glow in the streets.

But Athena could see, and so could Ewan.

"Heronica." Athena said in a flat tone, her arms crossing against her chest, her gaze cool and unreadable.

"Athena." Heronica said, like a greeting, shifting on her feet, looking a bit nervous.

Athena thought she didn’t look like the killer of months ago, but she could agree that the latter still had her skill set of guises. She folded her mouth, biting down the urge to slap the killer when the memory of that day burned into her head.

She rather took in the guise this time—all black male clothes, including the shoes and cap, all black. In this way, no one who had known them before would have recognized them. She wouldn’t have recognized them too, if there hadn’t been a text about this meeting.

Had she passed them without knowing, all this while? She wondered, looking between the two women, who seemed to even look like sisters with their peculiar, similar attire.

"Why did you send the text?" Athena finally went to the subject at hand, resigning to the truth that Ewan wouldn’t be saying a word to Fiona or Heronica, either in greeting or warning, and that Fiona was too scared to do the same.

She must know that even with her help, she was still hated by Ewan.

"Why do you want to meet up?"

Fiona licked her lower lip, shifted on her feet, looking smaller than Athena remembered, less sophisticated, humble, even though she wasn’t in chains as she had been when she was at Connor’s’

"I’m leaving."

Athena frowned, not understanding.

"I’m leaving the country," Fiona explained, glancing quickly at Heronica. "With Heronica here." She paused, licked her lower lip again. "We are tired of the games and were hoping you will let us go... that you will show us mercy and let us go... and in return, we will give you the location of where the others are, including their next plans."

Athena was speechless, to say the least. This wasn’t what she had been expecting.

"I know I’m not worth listening to... but I am trying to build a new life for myself, away from all these battles..." Fiona licked her lower lip again, as if sucking in strength to speak. "Heronica too. She was the one that saw the formula, understood it... she has a penchant for science..."

And killing, Ewan thought, looking at the black-clothed females before him, only concerned about escape. Even if Athena granted their request, would they be able to escape from the gang, from the machinery of the Grey Disease?

Athena sighed when silence descended after Fiona’s plea. They wanted out. Wanted a new life out of the country. Shouldn’t she give them that?

She faced Heronica. "You are no longer concerned about killing me for revenge... considering what happened to your brother?"

Heronica shook her head meekly.

"Why? What changed your mind?"

"I just... got tired."

"That isn’t convincing," Ewan pointed out, his tone edged with warning.

Heronica swallowed, hearing the threat in his voice. "Yes. But days spent with the doctors and Kael... I’ve been thinking... I don’t want that life anymore."

"You don’t want blood anymore? You are ready to give up that lifestyle? That might not be easy to do..."
