She leaned against the edge of the table, her gaze fixed on the deepening twilight outside the window. “Wesley, do you know why I hate Hulda?”
Before he could answer, she turned back, the dark wine in her glass reflecting in her eyes. “It’s not just because I found out she wasn’t my real mother. Did you know she couldn’t have children? To marry into the Rayburn family and live a life of luxury, she deliberately befriended my biological mother, all for the baby in her womb.”
“To this day, I don’t even know my mother’s name, only that she was in the same hospital as Hulda. To make the deception complete, on the day I was born, Hulda bribed the doctors. They cut my mother open just so the timing of the birth would line up.”
“My mother still had ten days before her due date. She could have lived, Wesley. My mother didn’t have to die. But Hulda couldn’t risk the truth getting out, so she made it look like a medical accident.”
Shane let out a harsh laugh, her eyes still burning with an unquenchable hatred. “Old Man Rayburn only cared about getting an heir; he couldn’t have cared less who gave birth to me! He didn’t even bother to ask questions when my mother died on that operating table!”
She leaned in, her hands gripping the arms of Wesley’s chair. “All these years, I’ve been waiting for an opportunity. I originally planned to wait until he trusted me, until he truly valued me, and then deliver the final, fatal blow at the last second.”
Wesley didn’t flinch. He even tilted his head up slightly, their noses almost touching. “But you didn’t do that.”
Shane seemed to lose herself for a moment. She straightened up and turned her back to him, her hands clenching at her sides. “After I found out about Quincy and Hulda’s affair, I gave up on that plan. I convinced him to drag Kate into it, making them both think they were on the same side as Hulda. And Hulda trusted my scheme, just waiting to reap the rewards. This all should have been over six months ago.”
“But my father brought my sister back to the family, so you had to delay your plan.”
Shane took a deep breath, her eyes devoid of emotion. “It doesn’t matter anymore. My plan is complete, for the most part.”
“You know, you don’t have to make it this complicated.”
Wesley looked at her, his face impassive as he continued, “If you kill me, wouldn’t that be the best revenge against him?”
Shane froze for a few seconds, then turned to look at him.
