With an arrogant air, Richard was about to leave with Marie and Elaine Ward.
Just then, Old Mrs. Lockwood—Grace Lockwood—emerged, her presence commanding the room.
"You come to my Lockwood home, insult my grandson's wife whenever you please, and then just walk away? Do you truly think this old woman is useless now?"
Although Old Mrs. Lockwood had Alzheimer's, her fierce protection of Natalie moved her deeply.
Marie could only grind her teeth in hatred. Natalie was just a divorced woman. Were the Lockwoods all blind to be protecting her like this?
Old Mrs. Lockwood was a highly respected figure, and Richard was nothing in her presence.
"Mrs. Lockwood, I heard you were ill. I apologize for disturbing your rest."
"Disturbing my rest is a small matter. But your attitude toward my grandson's wife just now... are you saying you don't take the Lockwood family seriously?"
Marie wanted to inherit the Ward Group and didn't want to stir up any more trouble at this critical time.
This Old Mrs. Lockwood was not a simple woman. There was no need to provoke her now.
Marie said, "Old Mrs. Lockwood, I'm sorry. It's all my fault. My parents were just being protective of me. I apologize for any offense. Please, forgive us."
"'I'm sorry' is not something you should be saying to me. You should be saying it to my grandson's wife. Your entire family owes her an apology."
At that moment, Old Mrs. Lockwood's eyes were as clear as glass, radiating an authority that didn't belong to someone with Alzheimer's, but to a decisive and powerful matriarch.
Hearing Old Mrs. Lockwood's words, Marie's face turned green. That damned old hag was actually protecting Natalie and cursing her like that.
Hadn't she heard this woman had dementia? How could her words still be so venomous?
"Thank you for your guidance, Old Mrs. Lockwood. May we leave now?"
Old Mrs. Lockwood didn't answer Marie. Instead, she turned to Kate Verdan.
"A person should have a conscience. Don't just think about your own flesh and blood. You should also appreciate the one you raised, the one who has been so devoted to you."
Natalie's relationship with Martin Doyle was poor because he had never shown her any kindness, only abuse. But Kate Verdan was different.
