Richard looked at Marie, a flicker of hesitation in his eyes.
Seeing Richard pause, Marie let out a breath of relief.
"Mom, Dad, I'm your daughter. You raised me for over twenty years. I'm not some animal you can just cast aside. I can't take you questioning me like this again and again. If you really wish I wasn't your daughter, then fine. As of today, I'm not."
Elaine seemed to feel they were being unfair to Marie.
Elaine tugged on Richard's arm, her voice sharp with anger. "How could you do a second test behind my back? One was enough. Why do it twice? Are you trying to get a result that says she's not our daughter? Think about how hurt Marie must be."
Richard wavered. Maybe doing two tests was going too far.
Hanley spoke up. "Grandpa, parents are supposed to love their children more than anything. How can you doubt your own child just because of what someone else says? I'm just a kid, but even I'd be really sad if I were questioned like this. Don't you understand, Grandpa?"
Hanley's words were innocent but sincere, and they sent Richard into a spiral of self-doubt.
Had he been too inconsiderate of Marie's feelings? Had he broken her heart?
Natalie watched Hanley wholeheartedly defend Marie, a resigned smile touching her lips.
Her son was certainly devoted to his aunt. It must run in the family.
"Marie, your father shouldn't have done this second test. I believe you. You're the daughter I raised for over twenty years. I can't distrust you and believe a stranger instead."
Hanley added, "That's right, Grandpa. You have to believe in Aunt Marie."
Elaine Ward said, "One test was enough. This talk about tampering is just Natalie's side of the story. We don't believe her."
Marie said tearfully, "Mom, thank you. Thank you for believing that I'm your daughter. I would rather die than have you doubt that I'm your own flesh and blood."
Seeing Marie crying so wretchedly, Elaine's heart softened.
Marie saw Natalie grab the report and move to open it.
Marie was enraged. "Natalie, what right do you have to open that? You keep setting me up, again and again! I won't let you get away with this."
With that, Marie's pretense dropped, and she lunged forward viciously to grab the report from Natalie's hand.
She absolutely could not let Natalie open that report.
As Marie flew at her like a woman possessed, Natalie coolly stepped back and gracefully passed the report to Terence.
Terence, without missing a beat, tore it open.
"No!"
Marie watched Terence rip open the report, and her world came crashing down.
