Liana's face was flushed, her eyes filled with sorrow.
The sight broke Natalie's heart, making it hard to breathe.
How could they? How could they say such things to a child? To Liana?
Simon glanced at Edgar Lockwood with a look of disdain. "Grandpa, look. What is this little girl doing? Waving her hands around like a monkey at the zoo. It's hilarious."
Before Terence and the others could reprimand him, Natalie's eyes darkened. "You looking to lose some teeth? Laugh one more time, and Liana's father and brother will make sure you're picking them up off the floor."
Simon felt a phantom pain in his jaw and immediately shut his mouth.
But he still looked at Natalie scornfully. "What did I say that was wrong? She is a little mute. She does look like a monkey waving her hands around. And she was clearly born but not raised!"
"Who says Liana doesn't have a mother? I am her mother!"
Never before had Natalie felt so determined to be Liana's mother. She would become her mother, and she would never let anyone say Liana was a child without manners again.
Liana looked at Natalie, her heart swelling with emotion.
She glanced at her brother, who nodded at her.
They had a mommy now. No one would laugh at them anymore.
Simon sneered, "Natalie, you're a divorced woman who wants to be their mother? Don't think we don't know what you're after. Trying to marry up, are we? You're not qualified."
"Whether Natalie is qualified or not is hardly for you to decide."
