Just then, Victoria rushed to Darren’s side, grabbing his hand. “Son, your hand is bleeding! Doctor! We need a doctor! You people are monsters, daring to attack someone. I’m calling the police right now to have all of you arrested!”
As Victoria grew more hysterical, Natalie calmly interjected, “Stop shouting. It’s just a superficial wound on Darren’s hand. If you keep screaming like that, the undertakers are going to show up.”
“Natalie, you’re horrible! How dare you curse my son!”
“It’s just a fact. If you stop wailing, they won’t come.”
Victoria’s face turned green. Darren looked at Natalie’s cold indifference, and his heart felt like it was being torn apart.
He held out his bleeding hand, his eyes dark as he questioned her.
“You used to get so nervous if I had even the smallest scratch. But now, you’re so cold.
“You used to be willing to do anything if I just looked your way, but now you’ve become so heartless. Is it because of this cripple?”
So he knew, she thought. He knew that all he had to do was glance her way and she would do anything. And that’s why he felt so secure, why he kept hurting her without a second thought.
“Darren, being married to you is like having a criminal record. You don’t need to remind me of it every time we meet.”
“Our five years of marriage… is that really just a criminal record to you?” Darren asked, his voice filled with disbelief.
“Yes.”
Natalie’s firm answer was a blow that left Darren struggling to breathe.
Did she find even the memory of loving him unbearable? Were all those times she stood behind him, whispering that she loved him, all lies?
“Ha ha…”
Darren suddenly laughed, a desolate and empty sound.
