Grace stroked Lucas’s head. “Child, why do you keep calling me Great-Grandma? I’m your mother. What new game are you playing? Do you want your father to buy you more of those little fighting figures? Your father is back now, we can all go to the market together, how about that?”
A wave of bitterness washed over Mrs. Lockwood as she watched Grace. Her mother-in-law’s memory was clearly stuck in the time when Edgar was still making deliveries to Ravenford Town.
She was smiling with a joy Mrs. Lockwood had never seen on her face before—the pure happiness of a family reunited, about to take their child on an outing. Grace’s life had been one of loneliness, her husband presumed dead and her son lost too soon. She’d been clutching those same prayer beads for fifty years.
Seeing her great-grandmother like this, Liana grew worried. She stepped forward and touched Grace’s hand, trying to offer comfort.
Grace looked at Liana. “Whose little girl is this? She’s so adorable.”
Liana gestured with her hands.
[Great-Grandma, you’re going to get better.]
“Such a beautiful little girl, but she can’t speak?” Grace said, her voice full of pity. “The poor child. We have to get her treated. Whatever it costs, we have to help her.”
Even though Grace didn’t remember Liana, her affection for her was instinctual.
At that moment, Edgar spoke coldly. “Terence is a cripple, and the child he fathered is mute. Genes like that are problematic. He can no longer be the head of the Lockwood family. My grandson Simon will take his place. I will not stand by and watch Terence ruin the Lockwood bloodline.”
“If we weren’t afraid of upsetting her further, we would have thrown you out already,” Mrs. Lockwood said furiously. “So please, show some respect for others, and for yourself.”
Grace took Lucas and Liana by the hand. “Son, I’ll take you to find your father. We’ll all go to the market, and we can bring this sweet little girl with us. We’ll buy her some candy, alright?”
“Great-Grandma, she’s my sister,” Lucas said.
