Was he here to help his grandson fight her grandson for the Lockwood family fortune?
She didn’t want to ask why he left with another woman all those years ago. She didn’t want to hear it. She just wanted him to get out and not bring any more turmoil to her grandson and daughter-in-law.
Mrs. Lockwood looked at Grace, understanding her intentions perfectly. She was trying to protect them.
Natalie watched the matriarch with a mix of emotions. As a woman, she imagined Grace must feel an overwhelming sense of injustice. She must want to march up to him and demand to know why he hadn’t returned for fifty years, why he had faked his death, why he had abandoned them.
Why now?
But she did none of that. She was in control.
Grace Lockwood was truly a legendary figure, and Natalie’s respect for her deepened.
“How can you question my grandfather’s identity?” Simon shouted indignantly. “He’s your husband! Don’t you recognize your own husband? Or have you gone senile?”
Just then, an arrow flew through the air and struck Simon’s hand.
Simon cried out in pain, clutching his wound. “Who was that? Who attacked me from the shadows?”
“I did.”
Terence stepped forward, his eyes filled with contempt, with Natalie following close behind.
“You dare speak to my grandmother that way? You must have a death wish.”
“Grandpa, look!” Simon whined. “Look what he did to me! He injured my hand!”
“Get someone to bandage it, quickly!”
