Mrs. Lockwood said excitedly, "Something about a 'heart of bronze'—they sent a pile of scrap metal! You should have seen the looks on Victoria's and the others' faces. It was priceless. The best part is, copper turns green! Haha! They even sent a funeral wreath! Those people are truly something else!"
Natalie hadn't realized Mrs. Lockwood had been watching the live stream, practically dying of laughter. It was pure joy for her.
"Grandma even suspected that I was the one who swapped the gifts. I'll admit, the thought crossed my mind, but Dad said it wasn't necessary. He said the presents others had prepared were plenty spectacular on their own."
Lucas covered his mouth, giggling uncontrollably.
Natalie smiled and glanced at Terence.
How could he have known what others had prepared? He had clearly put a lot of effort into this.
Mrs. Lockwood was animated as she spoke. "I heard that none of the Cross family's relatives from out of town showed up. The only guests were a bunch of old ladies from the neighboring town. Victoria is already a stingy person, so when Marie was taken away and those old women started packing up the leftovers, she was furious. Her face turned green."
Natalie was a bit puzzled. She could understand why the Cross family relatives didn't come; Marie had probably offended them all.
But how did a group of old ladies from the next town end up on the bus arranged by the Cross family?
She hadn't thought about it much at the time, but now it struck her as odd.
Lucas tugged on Natalie's sleeve. "Natalie, are you wondering how those old ladies got on the bus? I mean, it was supposed to pick up their relatives, right?"
Natalie nodded. Lucas leaned in conspiratorially. "It's because my daddy had someone spread a rumor that anyone who got on that bus would get a free meal at the reception."
"The moment they heard 'free meal' and 'private bus service,' a whole crowd of them rushed over. Do you think a bus can fit that many people? The old ladies who managed to squeeze on were no pushovers. They were the toughest of the tough, the ones who made it through the gauntlet! Haha."
