Elaine suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Marie by the collar, her eyes bloodshot with rage. “Marie, I want a straight answer from you right now. Did you kill your brother? Tell me! Say it!”
Before Marie could answer, Elaine, unable to contain her grief and fury, slapped her hard across the face, again and again, until Marie was completely stunned.
Her cheek stung, and blood trickled from the corner of her lip. “Mom, hit me, go ahead and hit me,” she mumbled. “Just don’t be angry. But I swear I didn’t hurt my brother. This is all Terence’s doing…”
“Enough! Shut your mouth!” Richard roared. “We will find out what happened. And if you really did kill your brother, we won’t wait for the police. We’ll bury you alive ourselves!”
Richard then pulled Elaine away, and they left. Marie collapsed onto the floor.
It was all over. Her parents were abandoning her. She was no longer Ms. Ward. Even if she somehow got out of this, she would lose the entire Ward family fortune. She would be nothing.
Even that old hag Victoria would look down on her.
Just then, Marie spotted Mrs. Peterson and lunged at her, consumed by rage, wanting to tear her apart.
“You damned old hag! Our family took care of you for twenty years, and you dare to betray me like this! You deserve to die! You really deserve to die!”
“The one who deserves to die is you!” Mrs. Peterson shot back. “Because of you, my husband died at sea, his body never found! You are despicable! You’re the one who deserves to die! Today, I finally got justice for my husband!”
“You’re talking nonsense! Your husband’s death was his fate! What does it have to do with me?”
“You caused my husband’s death, and you don’t feel a shred of remorse. You’re so arrogant. But I guess if you can murder your own brother, there’s nothing you wouldn’t do.”
