"The bride is quite beautiful. You can tell that dress cost a fortune. It's nothing like what brides in the village wear."
Hearing their compliments, Marie lifted her chin proudly. They may have been old women from the country, but at least they weren't blind. She supposed she could consider the banquet a form of charity for them.
"I heard she comes from a good family, too, the heiress of the Ward family. No wonder the Cross family is... keeping it all in the family, so to speak."
"I heard Darren's last wife never even had a wedding. It's strange, isn't it? Both are daughters-in-law, but this one gets two ceremonies."
The old women just loved to gossip.
"My son Darren and that Natalie were never properly married," Victoria announced haughtily. "That woman only managed to squeeze her way into the Cross family because she got pregnant with my son's child. We've since kicked her out. A low-class piece of trash from the gutter thought she could be my daughter-in-law? What a joke! My daughter-in-law has to be someone like Marie to be worthy."
Listening to his grandmother insult his mother, Hanley felt a pang in his heart.
He used to want his aunt to be his mommy, but now, seeing her in a wedding dress next to his daddy, it felt wrong.
The person standing next to his daddy in a wedding dress should have been his real mommy.
"If you're getting married, then get married. Cut the nonsense!" Darren snarled, his face dark with fury as he listened to Victoria's tirade against Natalie.
Startled by his outburst, Victoria saw the ugly look on his face.
Suddenly, there was a tremendous crash. Nicholas had flipped his entire table over.
"Who the hell do you think you are, insulting Natalie like that!"
Nicholas's action stunned everyone in the room.
Whispers erupted among the guests.
"Who is that man? He just flipped a table!"
"He has an air of nobility about him. He doesn't seem like an ordinary person."
