On the day of the Cross family wedding.
"Ms. Verdan, these are the clothes Mr. Lockwood has prepared for you. Please choose one you'd like to wear."
The butler led the way as several maids respectfully pushed a rack of clothes into the room. Each garment was a dazzling, high-end designer gown.
The dresses were beautiful, but why did Terence want her to wear a gown?
"Sir, is something special happening today? Why do I need to wear a gown?"
"Ms. Verdan, it is Mr. Lockwood's arrangement. We were not told the reason."
Natalie smiled faintly. "Please return these to him. I don't really have any occasions to wear this kind of clothing."
Natalie felt that if she wore one of these gowns and accidentally snagged it, she wouldn't be able to afford the repairs. There was no need to create trouble for herself.
"But..."
The butler was in a difficult position. After all, Terence had specifically instructed him to bring the dresses for Natalie to choose from.
He hadn't expected her to refuse. What was he supposed to do now?
Just then, Terence arrived, his expression cool. "Why haven't you chosen a dress? Do you not like any of them?"
Natalie raised an eyebrow at Terence. "I suspect you're setting me up. Are you trying to get me to ruin a dress so I have to pay you back?"
"Rest assured, if I wanted to tie you to my side, I have better ways than using a few dresses. You're not that cheap."
Natalie felt awkward. Frankly, she thought she was worth less than these dresses, which all looked like they cost a fortune.
"Well, thank you for thinking so highly of me, but I don't think I can wear these."
"Are you really not going to the wedding banquet?"
"Wedding? What wedding?"
"The Cross family's wedding."
Natalie had never once considered attending Darren and Marie's wedding.
