Marie stood up and walked over to Hanley. “Since it’s the parent-teacher conference today, I’ll go with you.”
Hanley looked flustered. “But Aunt Marie, are you finished eating? You’ve barely touched your food.”
“Nothing is more important than going to your conference. We can’t have all the other children with their parents while you’re there all alone, can we?”
Hanley was about to say she didn’t have to, but Victoria cut in. “Hanley, look how much your aunt cares for you. She makes sure you have everything the other children have, and even things they don’t. Your aunt is the only one who is truly sincere with you.”
Hanley gave a wooden nod. Marie added, “Hanley is the only little man in our family and the future heir of the Cross family. Of course, I have to pour all my energy into him. Right, Hanley?”
Marie got into the car with Hanley. Once they were inside, her expression soured with impatience.
Hanley had been wary of her ever since the incident and didn't dare to look at her.
After the driver had gone some distance, Marie suddenly said, “Hanley, I just remembered something important came up, so I can’t make it to your conference. I’ll just have the driver take you.”
She wasn’t going?
Hanley nodded vigorously.
Marie didn’t say another word. She got out of the car and walked toward a shopping mall.
She couldn’t be bothered to attend some parent-teacher conference for Hanley. In the past, she only went to deliberately provoke Natalie. But now that Natalie was gone, why should she torture herself by sitting in a kindergarten for two hours? She wasn’t an idiot. She’d much rather go shopping.
Hanley watched his aunt get out of the car and finally let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. His breathing became easier.
He used to like his aunt the most, but why was it that now, whenever she got close, he felt a knot of fear in his stomach?
Was it because of the nightmares?
