Before Natalie could reply, Mrs. Lockwood stepped in to shield her. She looked at Victoria with disdain. “Is the Cross family so poor that all you can serve at a wedding is tissues? If we came, we’d have to light some incense and burn some spirit money for you. You look like you can barely afford to live; you’ll probably be needing it in the afterlife soon enough.”
“I wasn’t talking to you! I’m here to see Natalie. Get out of my way, you brat!”
“You’re here to ask her whether she should slap you with her left hand or her right?”
“What?” Victoria asked, confused.
Mrs. Lockwood put an arm around Natalie’s shoulder. “When this old hag came in here showing off, you should have just thrown that invitation right in her face. It’s my fault. I forgot your hand was injured. I should have done it for you.”
“What?”
Before Victoria could process what was happening, Mrs. Lockwood snatched the invitation from the table where she’d placed it and, with a sharp *smack*, slapped it across Victoria’s face. The motion was swift, clean, and immensely satisfying to watch.
“Natalie, next time I’m not around and this one starts acting up, just do what I did. A couple of slaps will set her straight.”
Natalie was a little surprised but deeply impressed. She was a force of nature.
Victoria clutched her stinging cheek, roaring, “What do you think you’re doing? You uncultured, backwoods brat!”
“You’re the one who has no shame. I’m surprised a shameless person can even feel pain.”
“You wretched girl! If you have any guts, tell me your name and where you work. I swear the Cross Group will destroy you!”
