“I’m not trying to pay you off. I know you don’t need the money. This is what you deserve as my sister-in-law because these shares belonged to my older brother.”
Marie only grew more furious.
He had to bring up her dead husband again. What was the point? The man was long gone.
“Is this sudden urge to get rid of me because of Natalie? So she won some math competition. What good is that to you? You’re kicking me out for her?”
Marie was about to explode. She’d noticed the way Darren looked at Natalie at the competition; it was different. She could tell he was falling for her, but she never imagined he would actually kick her out of the family for Natalie.
What a joke. She was Marie Ward, how could she let anyone, especially Darren, just send her away with a check?
“For the past five years, I’ve been unfair to Natalie. I was so focused on making sure you felt secure in the Cross family, that you never felt redundant after my brother was gone.
So I demanded that she respect you in everything. She never understood, but she respected my wishes. She was always polite to you, and she never said a word when you stole her award all those years ago.
I’ve thought about it, and it’s not good for you to stay in the Cross family forever. You’re too young to be a widow for the rest of your life. It was shortsighted of me.”
Marie felt like she was going to burst.
She had only been guessing that Darren was doing this for Natalie, and he’d just admitted it. He didn’t even bother to lie. It was like a thousand needles stabbing her heart.
For five years, she had poured her heart and soul into him and Hanley. Wasn’t it all to become the woman by their side and drive Natalie away? Yet now, she was the one being kicked out.
