In the hospital room.
“In a beautiful forest lived a little rabbit who loved to watch the stars. The little rabbit rested its chin in its hands and gazed at the starry sky. Suddenly, a shooting star streaked across the night. The little rabbit quickly closed its eyes and made a wish, ‘I wish I could be friends with a star.’”
Hanley had begged Natalie to read him a story to make her stay.
But as she read, Natalie noticed he wasn’t paying attention.
He had never been a child who liked fairy tales, yet now he was uncharacteristically clinging to her, insisting she read to him.
“Hanley, you look sleepy. Mommy will stop reading now so you can sleep.”
Hanley visibly froze for a second. His daddy had told him he had to make Mommy read to him, and for a long time, to keep her from leaving. It wasn’t late enough yet.
“Mommy, I want to keep listening. What happened to the little monkey?”
Natalie smiled but didn’t call him out. She hadn’t been talking about a monkey; it was a rabbit. It was clear he wasn’t really listening, just going through the motions like it was a task.
“Okay, Mommy will keep reading. But you need to sleep, so close your eyes.”
“Okay, Mommy,” Hanley said.
He closed his eyes, and Natalie continued the story. But as she read, her thoughts drifted to Liana. She had read this same story to Liana last night, and the little girl had wanted to hear more. Natalie had promised to continue it tonight. It seemed she would have to break that promise. She wondered if Liana had managed to fall asleep without her story.
Darren watched the scene of Natalie reading to their child. Wasn’t this a heartwarming picture? Taking care of one’s own child was so much more fulfilling. Why was she so eager to be a stepmother to someone else’s kids?
As he looked at Natalie, he saw a serene, peaceful gentleness about her. He realized happiness was this simple. He had once possessed it, and he wouldn’t lose it again.
Natalie finally waited until Hanley was asleep. Now she wanted to go check on Lucas and Liana.
She stood up and tucked Hanley in.
When she turned, she saw Darren standing in the doorway. How long had he been there?
