“I’m sure of it. It’s not just about what happened today—five years ago, she stole my accomplishments, too. If you want to make things right, you need to give me justice.”
“What do you want me to do?”
Natalie’s gaze was icy. “I want you to… kick her out of the Cross family.”
Darren was deeply shaken, his voice tinged with panic. “You want me to kick Marie out of the Cross family? But she’s my sister-in-law. How can I kick her out?”
“She manipulated the system to steal someone else’s glory and then instigated an assault. I could sue her.”
“You can’t sue her.”
Natalie scoffed. “It seems you can’t bear to part with your dear Marie. Since you can’t, why are you even bothering me? We should… stay out of each other’s way.”
Natalie was doing it on purpose, knowing perfectly well he couldn’t do it.
Darren’s emotions suddenly flared. “You’re doing this deliberately, aren’t you? Intentionally dragging this out to force my hand.”
Natalie’s eyes were cold, her tone a mixture of laziness and indifference. “You’re the one who said you wanted to make things right. Now that you can’t deliver, why get defensive?”
“Natalie, you used to be so understanding, always thinking of others. Why have you become like this?”
“What does ‘understanding’ mean? It means sacrificing my own happiness for yours. But even when I did that, it’s not like any of you treated me well. Since that’s the case, why should I keep sacrificing myself?”
Darren stepped forward and suddenly pulled Natalie into a tight embrace. “That won’t happen again,” he said. “No one will ever treat you badly again. I can’t kick Marie out of the family—she was my brother’s wife, she’s family—but I promise you, we’ll move out. I’ll make sure she never appears in front of you again.”
He held her so tightly it was as if he wanted to merge her into his very being, like a wife he had lost and miraculously found again.
Darren held onto Natalie, thinking they could go back to how things were.
Natalie didn’t push him away, but her voice was colder than ice. “Making me move out of the Cross family is still asking me to be the one to back down. How is that any different from before?”
