“Why is my mother with you?”
“That man beat her. She didn’t want to trouble you, so she contacted me. The doctor is done changing her dressing. You can talk to her.”
Darren handed the phone to Natalie’s mother, Kate Verdan.
“Mom, how are you?”
“I’m fine. Thank goodness for Darren.”
Natalie felt a lump form in her throat. She and Darren were divorced. She didn’t understand why her mother would call him instead of her.
“Mom, where are you? I’m coming to find you.”
“I’m at the hospital.”
Natalie hung up and prepared to go to the hospital.
“I’ll go with you,” Terence offered.
“You should have dinner with your family. I can handle my mother’s situation myself.”
With that, she headed out to hail a cab.
“It’s hard to get a taxi around the Lockwood estate,” Terence said. “Let the driver take you.”
He was right. The estate was vast, with its own private road. It would be a long walk to find a taxi.
Natalie didn’t refuse.
“Thank you, Mr. Lockwood.”
She hurried off with the driver. The butler remarked, “Mr. Lockwood, we could have easily sent someone to bring Ms. Verdan’s mother here. After all, her ex-husband, Mr. Cross, is also there.”
“I trust she won’t go back to him.”
