“Did you see that, Natalie? This is what a real daughter-in-law of the Cross family looks like. Someone like you, who only knows how to waste money, was rightfully thrown out. The only one worthy of being a Cross daughter-in-law is Marie, Ms. Ward herself.”
Marie and Victoria preened. Marie said to the sales associate, “Wrap up this bag and charge it to my card.”
She took out her card, looking smugly at Natalie.
She wanted Natalie to understand the gap between them—that Natalie would forever be beneath her feet.
The associate replied, “I’m sorry, but Ms. Verdan was looking at this bag first.”
Victoria exploded. “What are you talking about? Do you have a brain? Can’t you see she’s just some kept woman? Where would she get the money to buy a two-million-dollar bag?”
Marie added, “It’s ridiculous that someone with no judgment like you can work at a luxury brand.”
“Terence would never pay for this for her. Hurry up, swipe the card, and give me the bag.”
Mrs. Lockwood scoffed. “Terence buys her more than just one bag. Why don’t you tell them how many bags Terence has ordered from you before?”
The associate replied professionally, “Mr. Lockwood previously ordered one hundred and sixty-six bags from us, all in rare leathers and limited editions. He said he was preparing a walk-in closet for Ms. Verdan and wanted to fill it up.”
Hearing this, Victoria and Marie’s faces fell.
What kind of joke was this? A custom walk-in closet for Natalie, filled with one hundred and sixty-six designer bags?
It had to be a joke.
“You’re lying! That’s impossible!”
